Guinea Pig Serum (Normal Guinea Pig Serum, NGPS) — CFT Complement Source | EU Origin | SeamlessBio
EU Stock0. 2 µm sterile filteredNo MOQCoA included
Normal Guinea Pig Serum (NGPS) occupies a unique niche in diagnostic immunology: it is the classical complement source for complement fixation tests (CFT), which remain standard for the diagnosis of Brucella, Chlamydia, and arbovirals in veterinary and public health laboratories. Guinea pig complement has optimal haemolytic activity for CFT sensitisation systems.
Applications
| Application | Protocol | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Complement Fixation Test (CFT) | NGPS as complement source for standard sensitisation | Brucella, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, arboviral CFT diagnostics |
| Haemolytic Complement Assays | CH50 determination using guinea pig complement | Standard reference complement for haemolytic unit calibration |
| IHC Blocking | 5% NGPS before anti-guinea pig secondary antibodies | Required for IHC panels using guinea pig primary antibodies |
| Guinea Pig Primary Cell Culture | Cell culture supplement for guinea pig cells | Lung fibroblasts, cochlear cells, corneal endothelium |
| Vaccine Potency Testing | Guinea pig model serology reference | DTaP, tetanus, diphtheria vaccine efficacy in guinea pig model |

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is guinea pig serum the standard complement source for CFT?
Guinea pig complement has high haemolytic activity, sensitivity to inactivation by immune complexes (allowing clear positive/negative discrimination), and availability in standardised lots. Human or bovine complement is not suitable for CFT.
Can I use heat inactivated guinea pig serum for CFT?
No — heat inactivation destroys complement activity (C1–C9) at 56°C/30 min. For CFT, always use native (non-HI) NGPS. Heat inactivated NGPS is only appropriate for IHC blocking and cell culture.
