2D Bioprocessing Bags for Single-Use Biomanufacturing
Premium single-use bags for cell culture media preparation, mixing, storage, and transport. 150 mL to 50 liters. Gamma sterilized. Made in Germany.
What Are 2D Bioprocessing Bags?
2D bioprocessing bags are flexible, single-use containment systems designed for the preparation, mixing, storage, and transport of biopharmaceutical solutions, cell culture media, buffers, and intermediate products. Unlike traditional rigid containers (glass or stainless steel), 2D bioprocess bags offer a sterile, disposable alternative that eliminates cleaning validation, reduces contamination risk, and accelerates production timelines.
Our 2D single-use bags are manufactured from USP Class VI certified polyethylene film, gamma sterilized to ensure sterility, and available in volumes ranging from 150 mL to 50 liters. Each bag features multiple port configurations for fluid transfer, sampling, and venting, making them ideal for a wide range of bioprocessing applications including cell culture media preparation, buffer storage, and intermediate product handling.
Why Choose Single-Use 2D Bags Over Traditional Containers?
- Eliminate Cleaning: No CIP/SIP required – saves time and reduces water/chemical usage
- Reduce Contamination Risk: Pre-sterilized, single-use design minimizes cross-contamination
- Faster Turnaround: Ready to use immediately – no setup or preparation time
- Cost-Effective: Lower capital investment compared to stainless steel systems
- Flexible Capacity: Scale from development (150 mL) to production (50 L) seamlessly
- Space Efficient: Compact storage when not in use

Applications of 2D Bioprocess Bags
2D single-use bags are versatile bioprocessing tools suitable for multiple applications across biopharmaceutical manufacturing, cell culture, and research workflows:
Cell Culture Media Preparation & Mixing
2D bags excel at media preparation tasks where mixing is required. The flat geometry provides excellent surface area for mixing when placed on orbital shakers or rocking platforms. Key applications include:
- Powder Media Reconstitution: Mix powdered media with water or base media efficiently
- Buffer Preparation: Prepare PBS, culture buffers, and washing solutions
- Supplement Addition: Add growth factors, sera, or other supplements with thorough mixing
- pH Adjustment: Mix and equilibrate media to target pH before use
Mixing Best Practices
For optimal mixing in 2D bags:
- Fill bags to 50-80% capacity for best mixing efficiency
- Use orbital shakers (80-120 RPM) or rocking platforms
- Allow 15-30 minutes mixing time for complete homogenization
- Consider magnetic stir bars for smaller volumes (<2L)
Storage Applications
The robust construction and temperature resistance make 2D bags ideal for various storage scenarios:
- Cell Culture Media Storage: Store prepared media at 2-8°C for up to 2 weeks
- Buffer Storage: Keep buffers and solutions ready for use
- Intermediate Product Storage: Hold process intermediates during manufacturing
- Freezing: Store materials at -20°C or -80°C (appropriate bags only)
Sampling & Aliquoting
Multiple port configurations enable convenient sampling and aliquoting:
- Sample Collection: Use sampling ports for QC testing without opening main chamber
- Aliquoting: Dispense into smaller containers via bottom drain ports
- Aseptic Transfer: Connect to downstream processes using sterile connectors
Transport & Shipping
2D bags are well-suited for safe transport of materials:
- Internal Transport: Move materials between facilities or buildings
- Cold Chain Shipping: Ship temperature-sensitive materials with dry ice or gel packs
- Sample Distribution: Send research samples to collaborators
- Secure Containment: Secondary containment reduces spill risk during transport

2D bags are excellent for cell culture media preparation, storage, and transport, but are not designed for active cell cultivation. For growing cells, we recommend our 3D bioprocess bags which are engineered for optimal oxygen transfer and are compatible with bioreactor platforms. Use 2D bags for mixing powdered media, preparing buffers, storing prepared media, and transporting cell culture materials.
All our 2D bioprocess bags are sterilized by gamma irradiation (25-50 kGy) in accordance with ISO 11137 standards. Gamma sterilization provides a Sterility Assurance Level (SAL) of 10⁻⁶ and does not leave any chemical residues. Each lot includes a gamma sterilization certificate with dose mapping data. The bags arrive ready to use with no additional sterilization required.

Our manufacturing facility is ISO 13485:2016 certified for medical device manufacturing. All bags are produced under cGMP conditions in an ISO Class 7 cleanroom. Materials are USP Class VI compliant, and gamma sterilization follows ISO 11137. We provide complete documentation including Certificates of Conformance, gamma sterilization certificates, material certifications, and extractables/leachables data. Our products are suitable for use in pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing under FDA and EU regulations.
When stored properly in original packaging at room temperature (15-25°C) away from direct sunlight and moisture, our gamma-sterilized 2D bags have a shelf life of 5 years from the date of sterilization. The sterilization date and expiration date are clearly marked on each package. Bags should be inspected for package integrity before use. If the outer packaging is damaged, the sterility cannot be guaranteed.
Filling: Use top ports for filling. Ensure vent filter (if present) is open to allow air displacement. Fill to 50-80% of nominal volume for optimal mixing or to maximize volume for storage. Draining: Use bottom drain ports for gravity drainage. For complete drainage, lay bag flat and gently massage liquid toward drain port. Bags can achieve >99% drainage when properly positioned. For pumping, use peristaltic pumps with appropriate tubing connections.
Yes, our 2D bags are suitable for freezing at -20°C and -80°C. When freezing: (1) Fill to no more than 80% capacity to allow for expansion, (2) Lay bags flat for uniform freezing, (3) Freeze slowly to prevent stress on seams, (4) Thaw slowly at 2-8°C or room temperature. Note: Bags frozen with liquid contents will become rigid and must be handled carefully to avoid puncture. Do not use sharp objects near frozen bags.
Standard Configurations: In-stock items ship within 2-4 weeks from order confirmation. Custom Configurations: Manufacturing lead time is typically 6-10 weeks depending on complexity and order volume. Rush orders may be accommodated for additional fees. For urgent needs or large volume orders, please contact us to discuss expedited options.
