Rhesus Monkey Serum

Macaca mulatta · US origin

Collected from US-origin Rhesus Macaques — the most widely used NHP model in biomedical research. Rhesus serum is the reference standard for NHP-based preclinical studies, vaccine research and immunology assays requiring primate-specific matrix material.

Key specifications:
Origin: US · Sterile filtered (0.2 µm) · No haemolysis
Screening: Herpes B Virus, SIV, SRV, STLV, retroviruses — negative
Storage: −20°C · Heat inactivation available on request
Available: 100 ml, 500 ml · Larger volumes on request

Cynomolgus Monkey Serum

Macaca fascicularis · US origin

Cynomolgus (Crab-eating Macaque) serum from US-origin donors. The preferred NHP serum for antibody blocking applications, cell culture supplementation and preclinical drug studies — particularly in oncology, immunology and neuroscience research.

Key specifications:
Origin: US · Sterile filtered (0.2 µm) · No haemolysis
Screening: Herpes B Virus, SIV, SRV, STLV, retroviruses — negative
Storage: −20°C · Heat inactivation available on request

⚠️ CITES Regulation Notice Rhesus and Cynomolgus monkeys are listed under CITES Appendix II. Import of non-human primate biological materials into the EU requires appropriate CITES documentation. SeamlessBio provides full import documentation for EU customers. Contact us before ordering for CITES compliance information specific to your country.

Applications

NHP serum is used wherever research requires a primate biological matrix closer to human than standard animal sera — particularly where cross-reactivity with human antibodies or human-relevant receptor binding is being studied.

Rhesus vs. Cynomolgus — Which to Choose?

Choose Rhesus when:
  • Your research protocol uses Rhesus as the animal model
  • Vaccine immunogenicity studies in Rhesus model
  • Cardiovascular or metabolic disease research
  • Historical precedent — your SOP specifies Rhesus
Choose Cynomolgus when:
  • Antibody blocking in IHC on primate tissue
  • Preclinical drug safety — cyno is the standard NHP model
  • Oncology, immunology or neuroscience cell culture
  • HIV / SIV research, AIDS pathogenesis

Frequently Asked Questions

What is monkey serum used for in research?

Monkey serum has two main applications: (1) as a cell culture supplement for NHP-derived cell lines and in research where primate-relevant growth factors are required, and (2) as a blocking reagent in antibody-based applications (IHC, IF, ELISA) where non-specific binding from primate cross-reactivity must be suppressed. Cynomolgus serum is the standard for most preclinical drug safety programs.

What is the difference between Rhesus and Cynomolgus monkey serum?

Both are macaque species with high genetic similarity to humans, but they differ in their use in research. Rhesus (Macaca mulatta) is the traditional NHP model for vaccine research, cardiovascular studies and reproductive biology. Cynomolgus (Macaca fascicularis) has become the preferred species for preclinical drug safety assessment because it is more readily available, smaller and easier to work with. For antibody blocking, both are used — match the species to the tissue or cell line you are working with.

Is CITES documentation required for EU import?

Yes — both Rhesus and Cynomolgus monkeys are listed under CITES Appendix II. Biological materials derived from CITES-listed species require appropriate import documentation when crossing international borders into the EU. SeamlessBio provides full CITES import documentation for EU customers as standard. Contact us at info@seamlessbio.de before ordering to confirm the requirements for your specific country.

Is heat inactivated monkey serum available?

Yes — heat inactivated (56°C / 30 min) versions of both Rhesus and Cynomolgus serum are available on request. Heat inactivation inactivates complement while preserving immunoglobulins and most growth factors. Contact us at info@seamlessbio.de to order.

Can I get a test sample before ordering?

Yes — test samples are available on request. Contact us at info@seamlessbio.de or +49 851 37932226. Batch reservation is available without prepayment once you have validated a lot in your system.
