FAQ - FBS Low & Very Low Endotoxin | SeamlessBio

Frequently Asked Questions: FBS Low & Very Low Endotoxin

Everything you need to know about our low endotoxin fetal bovine serum

What is the difference between Low Endotoxin and Very Low Endotoxin FBS?
The main difference lies in the endotoxin content:
  • Low Endotoxin FBS: Contains less than 5 EU/mL (Endotoxin Units per milliliter)
  • Very Low Endotoxin FBS: Contains less than 1 EU/mL
Recommendation: Very Low Endotoxin FBS is particularly suitable for highly sensitive applications such as vaccine production, immunological studies, and experiments requiring minimal immune activation. Low Endotoxin FBS is ideal for standard cell culture work and research applications.

Which cell lines are Low Endotoxin FBS particularly suitable for?
Low Endotoxin and Very Low Endotoxin FBS are especially recommended for:
  • Hybridoma cells for antibody production
  • Primary immune cells (lymphocytes, T cells, B cells)
  • Dendritic cells and macrophages
  • Stem cells (MSCs, iPSCs) in regenerative medicine
  • CHO, HEK293, and Vero cells for protein production
  • Cell lines for AAV and viral vector production

For all cell lines that are sensitive to bacterial contamination or immune stimulators, Low Endotoxin FBS is the preferred choice.

How do I properly store Low Endotoxin FBS?
Long-term storage:
  • Store at -20°C for up to 10 years shelf life
  • For maximum stability, store at -80°C (optional)
  • Avoid direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations
After thawing:
  • Use at 2-8°C in refrigerator for maximum 4 weeks
  • Avoid repeated freezing and thawing (leads to protein denaturation)
  • Thaw overnight at 2-8°C or in 37°C water bath (with constant swirling)
Tip: For frequent use, we recommend dividing the FBS into smaller aliquots (50-100 mL) after thawing and freezing them separately.
Is your FBS suitable for GMP production?
Yes, absolutely. Our FBS Low Endotoxin and Very Low Endotoxin are manufactured under cGMP conditions (Current Good Manufacturing Practice) and are ISO 13485 certified.

Documentation for GMP compliance:

  • Certificate of Analysis (COA) – detailed quality testing of each lot
  • Certificate of Origin (COO) – proof of origin
  • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet)
  • TSE/BSE compliance according to EU and FDA guidelines
  • Viral safety according to 9 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations)

All lots are fully traceable and delivered with complete documentation.

What quality controls does your Low Endotoxin FBS undergo?
Each lot of our FBS undergoes rigorous quality controls:
Test Method Specification
Endotoxin Test LAL (Limulus Amebocyte Lysate) <5 EU/mL (Low) / <1 EU/mL (Very Low)
Sterility 14-day USP Sterility Test Negative
Mycoplasma PCR & Culture Test Negative
Hemoglobin Spectrophotometry <25 mg/dL
Total Protein Bradford Assay 3.0-5.0 g/dL
pH Value pH Meter 6.8-8.0
Osmolality Freezing Point Depression 260-320 mOsm/kg

Additionally, each lot is tested for its growth promotion on relevant cell lines.

Where does your FBS originate from and is it BSE/TSE-free?
Our Low Endotoxin FBS originates from South America (Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil) – regions classified by the WHO and OIE as BSE/TSE-free.
Safety features:
  • All animals come from USDA-approved herds
  • No feeding with animal proteins (prion risk excluded)
  • Regular veterinary monitoring
  • Complete traceability to the herd

All lots are tested for viral safety according to EU Regulation 999/2001 and FDA 9 CFR.

Do you also offer gamma-irradiated or heat-inactivated FBS?
Yes, we offer several options:
  • Sterile Filtration (0.1 µm): Standard option, preserves all growth factors
  • Heat-inactivated (56°C, 30 min): Inactivates complement factors, ideal for immunological assays
  • Gamma-irradiated: Additional security for GMP production, reduces viral contamination

Recommendation: For most cell culture applications, sterile filtration is sufficient. We only recommend heat inactivation for specific requirements, as some growth factors may be lost in the process.
